UGLY

Posted in Group:

Hey everyone,
I am joining this group because I am in my breaking point.I am not going to do anything dramatic but I am utterly depressed. I am in the beginning of my second semester of college and I ultimately cannot stand it. I go to the University of Texas at Austin and have no friends here. I am very shy, but even when I talk to someone, nothing comes out of it. I just got a new haircut and I feel that even less people are talking to me now. I can't concentrate in school and the first semester was ultimately the same. I am also on academic probation. I only live 5hrs away from here so I am not far or homesick. I don't know what to do. I am sad.

Have you thought about seeking counseling? UT offers on campus counseling to its students, here is the information to reach the counseling center, http://cmhc.utexas.edu/. Have you tried joining a student group, volunteering, etc.? Most people are hesitant to put forth the effort to pursue a friendship if they think the other person isn't going to put forth the same effort, your shyness my also make people think you are standoffish (a common assumption). I think counseling will help you evaluate how you can take steps to improve both your social and academic process, they can both flourish, you simply need the right tools. This is a good first step.
